Promoting The Cleveland Way

Picture
The 109 mile long Cleveland Way has fabulous views, castles, gorgeous heather moorland, and fishing villages tucked into tiny coves. It's an important feature of the North York Moors National Park, and one we want to celebrate and promote.

Malcolm Hodgson is the Trail Manager, based at the NYMNP offices in Helmsley so he should be your first port of call if you need any information or support. Contact Malcolm Hodgson by email or call 01439 772700

Is your business 'walking friendly'?

Cleveland Way will be 50 years’ old on 24 May 2019.

Landscape artist Debbie Loane from Easingwold has been appointed as the trail’s artist in residence and is now preparing a major exhibition of her work, titled ‘109 Miles’ that will be staged from 11 May – 9 June at the National Park’s Inspired by… gallery at Danby to coincide with the anniversary.

Other plans to celebrate the Cleveland Way’s 50th will reflect the great diversity of the landscape, variety of features and the broad range of activities along the trail that make it so special. Plans include:

  • the publication of a booklet in the New Year listing the general public’s suggestions for the 50 best things to do on the Cleveland Way
  • the creation of a new film about the trail
  • a special 50-mile ultramarathon trail running event on 16 March organised by the Hardmoors Ultra Series.
  • the Inspired by… gallery’s 109 Miles exhibition 11 May – 9 June (preview day Thursday 9 May)
  • a special event on the actual anniversary on 24 May that will see walkers wearing 1960s hiking gear striding out from Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey.
  • two of the annual walking festivals dedicated to the Cleveland Way – the National Park’s WalkFest (25-27 May) and the Redcar & Cleveland Walking Festival (15-23 June)
  • a 5k family run on the Cleveland Way on 16 June
  • events aimed at schools and group visits.
  • fundraising for the official charities - Scarborough & Ryedale and Cleveland Mountain Rescue Teams.

It would be good if you could link to and share the information about the 50th anniversary and the 50 things booklet on this page.

Importance of National Trails

England's Great Walking Trails

The Cleveland Way is one of seven National Trails participating in the Discover England Funded project called England's Great Walking Trails which promotes the idea of 'challenge and comfort' to overseas visitors from the Netherlands, USA, and Germany.

The idea is to create interactive and enticing itineraries with the challenge of a long route, but comfort of a few nights in good accommodation en route, with plenty of rest days, pub and attraction visits.

There are five ways you can benefit from this project - act before 8th March 2019:

  • Follow a brief virtual workshop about the England's Great Walking Trails project here
  • Use the information and resources in the 'help' section of the National Trails Business Support website
  • Add your information to the National Trails website here
  • Add your details to the travel trade supplier's directory which the project team are currently collating here
  • Use and share the film below - the share link is https://youtu.be/4mvkCDDZ7wc
