Know Your Coast
We want to encourage more visitors to enjoy the North York Moors' coastal area between Saltburn and Cloughton.
We've arranged these taster sessions so you can sample great experiences and activities, and spread the word to your visitors.
Come to as many as you want - they're free!
Please note: places are limited so for each event we can only accept one booking per company. We reserve the right to give preference to the businesses that we consider most likely to benefit from these sessions.
Date: Tuesday, 20th September
Time: 7.00 - 9.30pm
Venue: Boggle Hole YHA, Mill Beck, Fylingthorpe, YO22 4UQWe have some of the starriest night skies in the country - we need to tell more people about them! Astro tourism is a growing market and another great reason why people might want to visit this magical part of the world. Join Richard Darn for this popular workshop on marketing our dark skies, running events and buying equipment. You will also learn what other businesses are doing to attract customers and get a crash course in stargazing!. Participants will receive ongoing support and monthly stargazing podcasts for a minimum of 12 months.
Whitby Whale Watching
Date: Tuesday, 27 September
Time: 10am- 1.30pm (meet at 9.45am for boarding)
Venue: Departs from Brewery Steps, Lower Harbour, Whitby YO21 3PR
Come aboard the Summer Queen and head out to see the whales that follow the herring migrating here to spawn. Over the last couple of years species spotted include minke, humpback, fin and sei whales, bottlenose and white beaked dolphins, porpoise and seals along with wonderful sea birds including gannets and puffins. Be prepared with warm layers, waterproofs and your camera for a very special experience

Date: Tuesday, 4th October
Time: 10am - 12.30pm
Venue: meet at the Bandstand, Pier Road, Whitby YO21 3PU Enjoy a photowalk around Whitby town with local professional photographers Janet & Richard Burdon and learn how to take great photographs. You’ll take a gentle stroll around town and learn the basics of what makes a good photo. Whitby is a photographer’s paradise, you’ll learn about simple compositional techniques allowing you to produce some stunning images. The session will adjourn at the Battery Parade café for a drink and discussion about the morning’s activities.
Wildlife & Photography of the North York Moors National Park
Date: Thursday, 6th October
Time: 7.30pm - 9.30pm
Venue: Sneaton Village Hall, Sneaton, YO22 5HS
Join Steve Race and Richard Baines of Yorkshire Coast Nature for a special presentation, guiding you from deep in the forest to the rugged coast. You’ll get top wildlife tips on photographing everything from whales at sea to plovers on the moors. Steve will be showing some of his best shots from his travels in the National Park. Richard will be exploring the forests and flower rich grasslands during his talk with an emphasis on what to look out for and where to find it as well as how to identify different species.

Venue: Sneaton Village Hall, Sneaton, YO22 5HS
Expert chocolatier Kala King will guide you through the art of making your very own handmade Belgian Chocolate. The session will cover aspects of tempering chocolate and making fresh ganache from natural fruits and herbs. You'll be amazed what can be achieved in just a few hours. All the decadent chocolate you make can be taken home to enjoy, although you may not get it that far!

Venue: Arches Cookery School, Grinkle Lane, TS13 4UD
Come and meet charismatic Sarah Muir and watch her do what she does best in her ‘office’ at Arches Cookery School. She’ll be demonstrating with various fishy foods, allowing you to learn new skills and sample the delicacies. You’ll have the opportunity to ask her questions and tap into her extensive cuisine knowledge. Share something in common with Radiohead, Oasis and Elton John, sit back and enjoy Sarah cooking for you!

You don't need to be on the coast to benefit: we are happy to work with inland businesses as well, so long as you recommend coastal activities, products and experiences to your guests and visitors.
